What Kind of Airline Is Qatar Airways?

Qatar Airways has transformed itself from a small regional carrier into one of the world’s largest and most well-known airlines. Its hub in Doha connects millions of people between East and West, with passengers flocking to fly with Qatar Airways because of its well-deserved reputation for providing excellence.

Most of Qatar Airways’ fleet is made up of widebody aircraft, including state-of-the-art airplanes like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Qatar Airways will also be one of the launch customers for the Boeing 777X when it is eventually certified to fly.

Cabin crew are based in Doha, and the majority live in company-provided accommodation. Qatar Airways suits candidates who want a truly international career, can commit to a fixed-term contract abroad, and are comfortable living within a set of rules that are stricter than at most airlines. Qatar is a conservative country, and life there is very different from home for many crew.

The Pay and Benefits Package

New Qatar Airways cabin crew start on a basic salary of around QAR 3,800 a month, rising to QAR 4,000 after a six-month probation period. Flying pay is around QAR 39 an hour, and layover allowances are paid on top. On a typical mixed roster, that adds up to roughly QAR 9,500 to 11,000 a month in the first year, tax-free in Qatar.

The package also includes free shared accommodation with utilities, transport to and from work, medical insurance, an annual ticket home, and staff travel across the oneworld network. Instead of a pension, crew receive an end-of-service gratuity when they leave.

The reality is that pay moves around from month to month, depending on how much you fly and where your layovers are. Crew report that basic pay and allowances have not risen since the pandemic, and Qatar Airways withheld its 2026 annual bonus, citing the security situation in the region.

The Recruitment Process

Qatar Airways recruits through Assessment Days held in cities around the world. Every application starts online, and the process usually runs through these stages:

  1. Online application with your CV, for a specific Assessment Day location
  2. Online English test and video interview, for some candidates
  3. An invitation-only Assessment Day, including a written English test, an oral test, the reach test, a formal check for tattoos and scars, and a group exercise
  4. A Final Interview, normally on the same day
  5. Photo submission and review by the HR team in Doha
  6. Medical tests and background checks
  7. A formal offer, followed by training in Doha

The Assessment Day is demanding. There are elimination rounds after the English test, the oral test, and the group exercise, and you can be cut at any of them.

Qatar Airways chooses its Assessment Day locations based on the nationalities and languages it needs at the time, so recruitment can feel unpredictable. A candidate who is unsuccessful in one city can succeed at another event, run by different recruiters, at a different time.

Is Qatar Airways Right for You?

Do You Suit the Qatar Airways Cabin Crew Role?

Six honest questions about the parts of this job that do not always make it into the job advert. Answer as yourself, not as you would like to come across, and you will get a straight read on where you are a strong fit and where it is worth thinking a little harder.

Question 1 of 6

Every Qatar Airways cabin crew member lives in Doha, usually on a fixed-term contract of around three years. Leaving early can mean financial penalties, and home is a long-haul flight away, with one free ticket home each year. How do you feel about committing to that?

Question 2 of 6

Qatar Airways is a strict employer. Your appearance is checked by grooming officers and again in the briefing room before every flight, conduct rules are enforced closely, and you are expected to stay calm and polished with demanding passengers in a premium cabin. How do you feel about working that way?

Question 3 of 6

Qatar Airways gives its cabin crew free, furnished accommodation in Doha, with utilities and transport to work included. It is one of the biggest perks of the job. The trade-off is that it is shared, you swipe in and out, there are rules about visitors, and you need to be home for nine hours before every flight. How does that sound?

Question 4 of 6

Qatar is a conservative Islamic country, and daily life has its own customs. Alcohol is only served in licensed venues, modest dress is expected in public places, and the laws on relationships and what you post online are stricter than in many countries. How do you feel about adapting to that?

Question 5 of 6

You must reach 212cm on tiptoes without shoes, and recruiters check formally for tattoos and scars at the Assessment Day. No tattoo can be visible in uniform, so arm tattoos are ruled out, and so are leg tattoos for female crew. A visible scar or birthmark can also count against you. Where do you stand?

Question 6 of 6

From Doha, Qatar Airways flies to more than 170 destinations across six continents. Your roster will mix short regional turnarounds, which can mean back-to-back flights and very early starts, with long-haul trips to cities like Sydney, New York and Johannesburg. Night flights and jet lag come with the territory. How do you feel about that kind of flying?

Your Breakdown

Qatar Airways suits candidates who want a truly international career, and who see a few years in Doha as an adventure rather than a sacrifice. The tax-free pay, free accommodation, oneworld network, and world-class product are real advantages, and the airline has changed a great deal in recent years.

But the trade-offs are real too. You will live in shared company accommodation with rules about when you come and go, including a nine-hour rest period at home before every flight. Appearance standards are among the strictest in aviation, and they are checked before every duty. Pay varies from month to month, and crew say it has not kept pace. And life in Qatar means living under laws on alcohol, relationships, and free expression that are much stricter than many crew are used to.

If you can commit to the contract, follow the rules without letting them wear you down, and embrace life in a very different country, Qatar Airways can be a great place to start your flying career.

How Qatar Airways Compares to Its Rivals

Emirates is the closest alternative, and the biggest. Based in Dubai, it offers a slightly higher basic salary, a larger network, and a more relaxed lifestyle, but appearance standards that are just as strict.

Etihad Airways Is based in Abu Dhabi and is in the middle of a major expansion. Like Qatar Airways, it now allows male cabin crew to wear a neat beard, while Emirates still expects a clean-shaven look.

flydubai is a short-haul alternative, also based in Dubai, with more nights at home and a housing allowance instead of company accommodation.

Our Gulf carrier salary comparison shows how the packages compare side by side.
