Etihad Airways: Quick Facts
Insight: Unlike Qatar Airways and many other airlines, Etihad doesn’t use a reach test. Instead, it sets a minimum height of 163cm. If you’re close to the line, measure yourself properly without shoes before you apply.
What Kind of Airline Is Etihad Airways?
Etihad is wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi and flies from Zayed International Airport. The wider Etihad Aviation Group also includes Etihad Cargo and Etihad Engineering, and more than 20,000 people work across the group.
It’s no lie to say that the airline has had a fairly turbulent history. After rapid growth in its first decade, Etihad plunged into heavy losses and, at one point, the very future of the carrier looked to be in jeopardy. Following a major restructuring, Etihad’s fortunes have been completely turned around. Today it is growing fast again.
Under its Journey 2030 plan, Etihad is aiming for more than 160 aircraft, more than 125 destinations, and 38 million passengers a year by the end of the decade.
Etihad’s aircraft fleet is built around the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, alongside the Airbus A350-1000, Boeing 777, Airbus A320 single-aisle family aircraft and the much-loved A380 superjumbo, which has returned to service on routes such as London, Paris and Singapore. Etihad is best known for its premium cabins, including the First Apartments and The Residence, a three-room suite on the A380 with its own butler.
Crew often describe Etihad as the most people-focused and relaxed of the big three Gulf airlines, and Abu Dhabi as a smaller, quieter place to live than Dubai. Etihad suits candidates who want a Gulf career with room to grow, in a city that is calmer than Dubai, and who are comfortable with detailed grooming standards that are enforced every day.
The Pay and Benefits Package
New Etihad cabin crew start on around AED 4,600 a month. With flying pay and allowances on top, a typical first-year month comes to roughly AED 10,000 to 12,000, tax-free in the UAE. That puts Etihad broadly level with Emirates in year one, and slightly ahead of Qatar Airways.
Shared accommodation is provided free of charge, along with transport to and from work. Like the other big Gulf airlines, Etihad employs crew on a fixed-term contract rather than a permanent one.
Promotion can come quickly. Crew can move from Economy to Business Class in as little as 12 months, and from Business Class to Cabin Senior in a further 12 months, and Etihad’s expansion may shorten those timelines further.
Worth knowing: Your take-home pay will vary from month to month, depending on how much you fly and where your layovers are. Budget around the lower end of the range, not your best month.
The Recruitment Process
Etihad recruits through Assessment Days held in cities around the world, and occasional walk-in Open Days. Most applications start online, and the process usually runs through these stages:
- Online application through the Etihad careers site, or a walk-in Open Day
- Shortlisting, with successful candidates invited to an Assessment Day by email
- The Assessment Day, including registration and document checks, a height and tattoo check, a short written English test, the random question test, and a group exercise
- A competency-based final interview, usually on the same day
- Medical and background checks
- A formal offer, followed by paid training at Etihad’s training campus in Abu Dhabi
The stage that catches most candidates off guard is the random question test. You are given an unexpected topic and asked to speak about it on the spot. There is no right answer. Recruiters are watching how you think, how you communicate under pressure, and whether you stay composed.

Is Etihad Airways Right for You?
Etihad suits candidates who want an international career at an airline that is growing, and who would rather live in a calmer city than Dubai. The tax-free pay, free accommodation, premium product and the chance of fast promotion are real advantages, and crew often describe the culture as warmer and more relaxed than at its Gulf rivals.
But the trade-offs are real too. Etihad’s Style and Image standards are among the most detailed in aviation, covering everything from approved lipstick shades to the size of a hair doughnut, and they are checked every day. Pay varies from month to month. You will live in shared company accommodation, on a fixed-term contract in a country with laws on alcohol, relationships and public behaviour that are much stricter than many crew are used to. And Abu Dhabi’s quieter pace is a plus for some people and a drawback for others.
If you can live with the rules, embrace life in the UAE, and want to grow with an airline that is expanding fast, Etihad can be a great place to build your flying career.
How Etihad Airways Compares to Its Rivals
Emirates is the biggest of the Gulf airlines, and its Dubai base offers a busier, more glamorous lifestyle. First-year pay is broadly similar, but Emirates still expects its male crew to be clean-shaven, while Etihad allows a neat, full beard.
Qatar Airways is based in Doha and is part of the oneworld alliance. Its first-year pay is slightly lower, its accommodation rules are stricter, and it began allowing beards in November 2026.
flydubai is a short-haul alternative based in Dubai. It offers an open-ended contract and a housing allowance instead of company accommodation, with more nights at home.
