Top Tip: If you applied in the July round and haven’t heard back, don’t submit a second application now. United is still processing that applicant pool, and applying again won’t move you up the queue.
The new flight attendant contract is a big pull for candidates applying to United. Minimum Requirements
Before you start preparing, make sure you actually qualify. United’s published minimum requirements include:
- Age: 21 or older at the time of application
- Education: High school diploma or GED
- Experience: At least one year of customer service experience in a service industry such as retail, hospitality, food service, teaching or healthcare. Previous flight attendant experience is not required
- Language: Fluent spoken and written English. A second language is an advantage and opens up language-qualified postings
- Passport: A valid passport already in your possession, with at least 12 months of validity and two consecutive blank pages. A pending application or renewal doesn’t count
- Travel eligibility: Able to enter and leave every country United serves without restriction, as a working crew member
- Reach: A combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach, held at the same time, without shoes. There’s no fixed height requirement
- Right to work: Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Background and screening: A 10-year background check and DOT pre-employment drug screening. Medical and recreational marijuana are both prohibited
United’s current tattoo policy is worth carefully reviewing before applying. United does not permit tattoos on the head, hands, fingers or neck, including on or behind the ear, and those can’t be covered with makeup or bandages. Visible tattoos elsewhere on the arms, wrists, legs and feet are allowed, as long as each one is no larger than a credit card or is covered by the uniform.
