Update — 24 August 2026
Since this article was first published, American’s careers page has changed its stated opening date more than once, and the window has not opened as originally indicated. Read the full update here for the current situation and what it means for candidates.
American Airlines has confirmed that a new flight attendant hiring window opens on Monday, August 24, 2026, at approximately 8:17 pm Dallas time, with a countdown clock running on the official careers page. Candidates selected during this process will begin training in 2027, meaning this is a pipeline hire rather than an immediate start, but the application window will not stay open indefinitely, and preparing now rather than scrambling when it opens is what separates candidates who progress from those who do not.
Remember, this isn’t a rolling hiring process. The application window will only open for a short period, and the countdown is your signal to get ready right now.
The airline has been unusually transparent about what the process involves, publishing a detailed step-by-step breakdown of every stage before applications even open. That transparency is itself a signal about what American Airlines is looking for: They want candidates who have done their research, understand what they are committing to, and show up to each stage genuinely prepared.
Insight: The virtual interview with recruiters is new for this 2026 hiring cycle, added between the personal introduction video and the in-person interview experience. That additional stage gives American Airlines more touchpoints to assess candidates before committing to the cost of flying them to Dallas for the in-person experience. It also gives you an additional opportunity to demonstrate that you are the right fit. Treat it with the same seriousness as the in-person stage, not as a formality.
The Role and Where You Will Be Based
American Airlines flight attendants are based across the carrier’s network of hubs and focus cities. Base assignments are seniority-driven, and new hires are assigned based on need rather than preference, though the ability to transfer develops with time and seniority.
Training takes place at American’s dedicated training facility in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. If you do not live in the DFW area, American provides confirmed flights to and from training, covers hotel accommodation for the full six weeks, arranges transport between the hotel and training centre, and provides three meals per day. You will have your own room for the entire training period.

The training program lasts six weeks and covers safety, customer service, and the operational procedures you need to carry out the role. Training is not paid, but given that accommodation, meals, and flights are all covered, the out-of-pocket cost to candidates from outside the Dallas area is fairly minimal.
Following training, there is a six-month probationary period during which performance, attendance, and overall fit for the role are evaluated.
Training classes for this hiring cycle are expected to begin in the first or second quarter of 2027, with classes generally concluding by May or June.
Worth knowing: Unpaid training is standard at US majors, and American is not unusual in this respect. What is notable here is the level of support provided during those six weeks: private rooms, meals, and transport are all covered. That being said, six weeks without pay, even with this support, can be tough, and some financial planning is required.
What’s the Process?
American has published the most detailed pre-application process breakdown of any major US carrier, and it is worth reading carefully because each stage has specific requirements and timelines.
Stage 1 — Before You Board video Before you can apply, you watch a short preview video that describes the hiring process and gives an honest look at what the flight attendant role involves. This is not optional but rather the gateway to the application. American explicitly says it is designed to help you decide whether the career is right for you, which is a more candidate-respectful approach than most airlines take.
Stage 2 — Application and online assessment Submit your application, share your experience and qualifications, and complete an online assessment covering your strengths and capabilities.
Stage 3 — Personal introduction video If selected to continue, you record a short video introducing yourself and responding to situational questions. The questions are designed to show how you think, communicate, and care for others. You have 72 hours to complete it from the moment it is assigned.
Stage 4 — Virtual interview (new for 2026) A virtual conversation with members of American’s recruiting team. This stage was not part of previous hiring cycles and represents an additional filter before the in-person experience. Treat it as a full interview, not a preliminary chat.
Stage 5 — In-person interview experience The in-person stage takes place in Dallas-Fort Worth. American flies candidates in from outside the area. You meet members of the team, take part in interactive activities, and demonstrate how you bring safety, service, and care to life in a real-world assessment environment. Polished professional attire is required.
What Does American Look For?
American’s in-person interview appearance requirements are published in advance and worth knowing before you attend:
- Attire: Business professional. Men in a suit with tie and polished closed-toe shoes. Women in a pant or skirt business suit, professional dress, or equivalent — knee-length or longer, closed-toe shoes.
- Hair: Neatly styled. Shoulder-length or longer must be secured.
- Facial hair: Permitted if between ¼ inch and 1 inch in length, clean and well-groomed.
- Tattoos: No visible tattoos or body art.
- Jewellery: Maximum one earring per earlobe, no ear gauges, no facial piercings, no decorative dental embellishments.
These are in-person interview requirements. The same standards will apply on the job.
No prior flight attendant experience is required. American recruits on customer service instinct, communication, composure, and the kind of genuine warmth that makes passengers feel looked after rather than processed.
