Qatar Airways Will Let Male Cabin Crew Wear Beards From November 1

Qatar Airways will allow its male cabin crew to wear beards from November 1, 2026, in one of the biggest changes to its grooming standards in years. It’s welcome news for current crew and for anyone hoping to join the Doha-based airline, which has long been known for some of the strictest appearance rules in aviation.

News of the change first emerged last week in a leaked internal memo promising a “new chapter in personal style,” which the airline acknowledged as a “long-anticipated update” that recognises “individuality while continuing to uphold the polished, professional image that defines our cabin crew around the world”. Qatar Airways has now confirmed the policy to The Cabin Crew Forum.

“Qatar Airways aims to keep its standards sharp, and our cabin crew are an important part of that process,” a spokesperson told us. “We can confirm that from 1 November 2026 male cabin crew will be able to wear a neat and well-groomed beard.”

What’s Changing?

Until now, male Qatar Airways cabin crew had to be clean-shaven, with only a neatly trimmed moustache allowed. Crew whose stubble grew back quickly could even be asked to shave mid-flight on some of the airline’s ultra-long-haul flights.

From November 1, beards will be permitted as part of updated Image and Style standards. The memo, addressed to all cabin crew, describes the change as a “long-anticipated update” that “recognises individuality while continuing to uphold the polished, professional image” of the airline’s crew.

The key word is neat. The memo says beards “must be neatly maintained and aligned with our grooming standards to ensure a consistent appearance”, and the photos that accompany it show short, sharply defined beards rather than anything longer or more relaxed.

How Does This Compare With Emirates and Etihad?

Qatar Airways now joins Etihad Airways, which already allows male cabin crew to wear beards. Etihad’s rules give a good idea of how tightly a Gulf airline is likely to define a “neat” beard:

  • Only a full beard is allowed, with no patchy or empty areas
  • The beard must be between 3mm and 6mm long
  • The neckline and upper cheeks must be shaved, with defined outlines
  • Goatees and thin-line beards are not allowed
  • Visible stubble while growing a beard out is not allowed
  • If you can’t grow a full beard, you must be clean-shaven

That leaves Emirates as the only one of the big three Gulf airlines that still expects its male cabin crew to be clean-shaven.

What It Means If You’re Applying

Male candidates may be able to join Qatar Airways with a beard for the first time. Until Qatar Airways publishes updated guidance for applicants, the safest approach is a very neat, short, full beard with sharp lines, or a clean shave. A patchy or half-grown beard is likely to count against you.

The beard rule is only one part of Qatar Airways’ appearance standards. Visible tattoos, scars, hair, and grooming are all checked formally at the Assessment Day. Our Qatar Airways appearance and grooming guide explains the rules in full.
