Delta Air Lines is still accepting applications for new flight attendants as the Atlanta-based Skyteam member attempts to grow its inflight workforce by more than 6,000 crew members by the end of the year.
Since February, around 1,940 flight attendants have gone through the entire recruitment and training process and have already earned their wings, according to Jennifer Martin, who is Delta’s managing director for learning and hiring within the inflight services department.
That, of course, means that if Delta is to hit its target of 6,000 new flight attendants by the end of 2023, around 4,000 more flight attendants need to be hired and trained within the next five and a half months.
Unsurprisingly, Martin described 2023 as “a historic year” for flight attendant hiring. “We’re excited to keep the momentum going and welcome more trainees for classes through the end of the year,” Martin commented on Wednesday.
Not that Delta is letting its standards slip. The airline has maintained a rigorous five-stage assessment process which weeds out eager candidates at every step.
The first stage is to submit an online application, but Delta’s recruitment team warns flight attendant hopefuls that trying to submit more than one application or using multiple email addresses will do more harm than good to your chances of securing a job with the airline.
If your initial application hits the mark, then you’ll be asked to take place in an online ‘talent assessment’ – essentially a personality test that assesses whether you are a good match for Delta as a flight attendant.
Once you’ve passed that element, you’ll be asked to take part in a virtual job tryout, which is more like a customer services assessment in which you’ll be asked to respond to various scenarios to see whether you already have the necessary skills to handle common (and less common) customer services issues.
If you manage to pass this assessment, you’ll then have to complete an online and on-demand video interview where you get to talk about yourself and your experience and answer some scenario-based questions.
Only if you pass this assessment will you then be invited to Delta’s World Headquarters in Atlanta to take part in an in-person interactive assessment and interview day, where you’ll receive a presentation about working at Delta before completing a series of team assessments and a one-on-one interview.
Finally, the best of the best will receive a job offer and go on to complete a six-week intensive training course at Delta’s campus in Atlanta.
Delta’s recruitment team really are working at full capacity at the moment. In 2022, the airline hired a record 4,300 new flight attendants, but the airline is hoping to smash its own record by recruiting as many as 6,000 new crew members in 2023.
