You Could Become a Qantas Flight Attendant On a Casual Contract, Giving You Flexibility to Juggle Other Commitments

How do you fancy becoming a flight attendant but still having loads of flexibility to choose when you work? I mean, being a flight attendant is a great career choice but airline rostering for full-time crew can be incredibly demanding. Sure, some airlines offer part-time contracts, but you generally need to have worked several years on a full-time basis before you can even think about applying to work part-time.

But how about working as a flight attendant on a casual contract? You probably didn’t even think it was possible, but there are a few airlines that offer these kinds of contracts, and Australian flag carrier Qantas is one of them.

Okay, technically, Qantas isn’t actually the airline employing you, but Qantas uses contract flight attendants who are hired and employed by an airline resourcing company called Altara Resources.

The company provides resource services to several aviation businesses, including Qantas and its low-cost subsidiary Jetstar. At the time of publication, Altara is hiring casual flight attendants to work across the Qantas domestic network. Opportunities are available in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Altara says it’s preferable’ if casual flight attendants are available to work 15 days or more per work, including some weekends and holidays, although remember, the whole point is that you are being hired on a casual basis and there are some months where you might be busier than others.

This could work out really well if there are certain months where you want or need to work more and other months where you can’t commit as much time. That being time, there could be times when there isn’t much work available, and you won’t earn as much time. Conversely, you might be expected to commit time that you don’t necessarily want to give due to other commitments.

Altara currently employs around 700 Qantas flight attendants across Australia, although its biggest base is in Melbourne. Minimum requirements for the job, include:

  • At least 18 years old
  • At least 186cm tall and able to reach 212cm (arm span must be at least 127cm)
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • No visible tattoos
  • Australian or New Zealand permanent residency

Of course, you’ll also need to have previous experience in customer service, and you’ll have to demonstrate that you’re able to work under pressure and deal with people in demanding situations.

On top of all of that, you’ll also need to already have (or be willing to obtain) a senior First Aid certificate, a current Responsible Service of Alcohol Service and a valid passport.
