Access to the airline catering department is strictly controlled to ensure health and safety laws are properly adhered to. Access is only allowed to employees with a green ID pass. Employees with an orange ID pass can only enter the catering department if they are escorted by a green ID pass holder.
Visitors to the department can also be escorted if they have a temporary ID badge which displays their name, photo and purpose for being at the factory. The pass must also have the name of who will be escorting the visitor printed on it.
All employees, whether they have a green or orange pass, as well as visitors must comply with certain rules:
Before entering the preparation room, everyone must put on special shoe covers. Once in the preparation room, employees and visitors must thoroughly wash their hands and then apply an alcohol-based disinfectant hand lotion. There is an alternative lotion which doesn’t contain alcohol for anyone who objects on religious grounds.
A hair net and a long white jacket must be worn by green pass holders. Orange pass holders and visitors must wear a long light pink coloured jacket. Employees must get a buddy to check they do not have any strands of hair sticking out of their hairnet. If they are on their own, they should check themselves in a mirror which is provided. Once this is complete, everyone must pass through an airlock where they must put on non-latex gloves.
Once the outer door to the airlock is closed a special filtration system will replace and clean the air. This process takes 20 seconds to complete. No one must enter the facility until a green disc appears above the door. If the disc remains red or changes to amber then help should be sought. A special phone is provided in the airlock. Picking up the phone will automatically connect the caller with the security department.
In the event of an emergency, a large red button can be pushed. This will activate a continuous monotone alarm and unlock both sides of the airlock. Everyone in the airlock must evacuate to the preparation room side unless there is a hazard forcing them to evacuate into the facility.
