Singapore Airlines has become the latest airline to see its profits plunge on the back of rising oil prices. The carrier today reported an 80% drop in second-quarter profits to $41 million as fuel costs rose some 24% in the three months to the end of September. Singapore Airlines is in the midst of a transformation programme to cut costs and better compete with big rivals in Asia and the Middle East – although, today’s news shows there’s still more to be done.
Yet despite the setbacks, Singapore Airlines is actively recruiting new cabin crew – not only in Singapore but also across Asia, with recruitment events set to take place in Malaysia, China, Indonesia and elsewhere over the next few months. Cabin crew at the airline can expect to earn something in the region of SGD$4,500 per month after initial training – which amounts to a rather generous $3,250 USD.
Singapore Airlines has one of the longest cabin crew training courses in the industry – taking around four months, the course covers basics like safety and security, First Aid and Crew Resource Management, as well as grooming, “deportment” and the airline’s legendary service procedures.
