Earlier this year, Lufthansa announced plans to hire 8,000 new employees, including 2,500 flight attendants across its group of airlines – so that’s not only Lufthansa itself but also other brands like Austrian, Eurowings and SWISS. Most people apply for one of these positions via Lufthansa’s official careers website but there is another really interesting way to land the job.
Lufthansa is one of the few airlines which still organises Open Day’s – or as it sometimes calls them ‘Castings’. Candidates can attend an event and speak with recruiters and serving cabin crew to find out more about the job and whether it might be something that suits them. And if it does, candidates have the opportunity to apply right there and then – with an initial decision coming the same day.
The next one of these Open Day’s is to be held in Munich on the 1st September at the Novotel Muenchen Airport Hotel. Candidates can arrive at any time between 9 am to 5 pm but we would suggest getting to the event as early as possible. Lufthansa will be accepting applications at the event for flight attendant roles in both Munich and Frankfurt.
The Lufthansa casting sessions are really interesting and many successful candidates find out whether they will be offered a job during the event. Of course, if you can’t make this Open Day, there’s still the opportunity to apply online – applications are regularly reviewed and Assessment Day’s take place throughout Germany.
You’ll need to be at least 18-years old and already have the right to live and work in Europe (Lufthansa is unable to provide sponsorship). You’ll also need to be fluent in both German and English, and possess excellent communication skills.
Other minimum criteria include:
- A minimum height of 160cm and a maximum height of 195cm
- Educated to at least High School level
- Physically fit and a strong swimmer
- Visual acuity between +/- 5 diopters
- No visible tattoos or body piercings
- In possession or able to obtain a passport with unrestricted right to travel abroad
You’ll also need to prove you are able to work well in a team, have a friendly demeanour and a well-groomed appearance. Other keywords include: “independent, dedicated, and proactive” and holding a “sense of responsibility and dependability.”
Successful candidates can expect to earn €1,416 per month, plus a 16.3% shift bonus with full-time employment – up to 83% (flight attendants on this contract work fewer hours in the winter months when Lufthansa schedules less flights). There is also a 50% contract available, whereby flight attendants only work for 6-months of the year on a reduced salary.
As well as opportunities at Lufthansa, there are currently positions open at Eurowings (Dusseldorf, Hamburg and a number of other European cities), Lufthansa CityLine (Munich and Frankfurt), and Germanwings (available throughout Germany).
On top of that, SWISS is looking for flight attendants to join its team in Zurich and Austrian Airlines also has positions open for its Vienna base.
