It’s not every day that a brand new airline takes to the skies but that’s exactly what will be a happening later this month with the addition of a new long-haul carrier in Europe’s aviation scene. Air Belgium, will begin flying between Brussels and Hong Kong on 30th April – In the future, the airline plans to offer services to more destinations in China and Asia.
And now the airline is actively recruiting for a number of positions, including pilots, ground crew and of course, cabin crew. But Air Belgium isn’t looking for just anyone to join their new team – they’ve got quite an extensive list of requirements which might be quite difficult to meet.
As is normal, you’ve got to be medically fit, able to swim confidently in water and have a valid passport to live and work in the EU. But on top of that, candidates must speak English, Dutch and French or be fluent in spoken English and Mandarin / English and Cantonese.
Just that language requirement alone will probably mean that many candidates can forget submitting an application already. However, if you’re still up for the challenge, then you’ll also need to meet the following requirements as well:
- At least 18-years old
- Educated to at least High School Diploma level
- Able to fly from multiple bases within 120km of Brussels
- Able to reach a height of 210cm
Air Belgium is looking for candidates who are “outgoing”, with a “jovial personality” and “excellent communication skills.” On top of that, you should have a “positive outlook” and being helpful should come as “second nature” to you.
Finally, you’ll need to be well presented and have a “pleasant, positive appearance” – that means, no visible tattoo’s or piercings while wearing the company uniform.
In return, Air Belgium says it is offering full-time cabin crew positions on Belgian employment contracts. Candidates can submit their application via the official Air Belgian careers website.

The airline has started up with capital of just €20 million and says it is being funded by Belgian and European majority shareholders, along with minority stakeholders in Asia. How far that money will go in today’s ultra-competitive aviation market though, remains to be seen.

Initially, Air Belgium will have four Airbus A340-300 aircraft which previously belonged to Finnair. Tickets went on sale today and fares start at €449 for a return trip in Economy. Premium economy starts at €999 and Business Class fares will go for as low as €1,799. Initially, the airline will fly four times per week between Brussels and Hong Kong.
The airline will be based out of Brussels South airport – normally used by short-haul low-cost airlines. Air Belgium claims it will build its own dedicated premium terminal at the airport in the next few years.
It looks like things really are about to take off for Air Belgium. In March, the carrier obtained its official air operators certificate and new uniforms for cabin crew were recently unveiled.
“Our hostesses and stewards will embody our company and be our best ambassadors to travellers,” commented Kurt Abeloos, Head of Cabin Crew & Inflight Product at Air Belgium.
