Qantas is Recruiting New Zealand-Based Cabin Crew for Trans-Tasman and International Routes

In the last couple of days, Australian flag-carrier Qantas has posted an interesting job ad for New Zealand-based cabin crew to join its team, working on both Trans-Tasman routes and also long-haul international services.  The airline is currently accepting applications via its official careers website, with training courses likely to start in early 2019.

While Qantas has its largest cabin crew bases for long-haul international flights in Sydney and Melbourne, the airline also has a wholly owned subsidiary company called Jetconnect which is based in Auckland, New Zealand.  Not that the casual observer would notice a difference – Jetconnect cabin crew wear the exact same uniform as their mainline counterparts and work on Qantas liveried aircraft.

Successful candidates will mainly work on some of the 150 weekly Trans-Tasman flights the airline operates, although you’ll also be trained to work on most of Qantas’ widebody international fleet of aircraft to destinations that include Los Angeles, Singapore, Hong Kong and Johannesburg.

As always, Qantas is looking for candidates who have experience in delivering customer service excellence, and who can prove a commitment to safety and security.  In addition, candidates will need to prove they are “intuitive, caring, energetic and responsible professionals.”

As Qantas is unable to offer sponsorship for this opportunity, you will already need to have the right to live and work in New Zealand with Kiwi or Australian permanent residency.  In addition, you’ll also need to meet the following minimum criteria:

  • At least 18-years old
  • Between 163cm and 183cm tall
  • Possession of a Senior First Aid certificate and Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate
  • Able to swim at least 50 metres fully clothed
  • Excellent health and fitness

As part of your application, you’ll need to prove a strong commitment to customer service with evidence from a recent face-to-face role.  An understanding of different cultures and diversity is also essential, as well the ability to work within a team and to deal with challenging situations.

Experience in food and beverage service is also a great skill, although not essential.

Applications have to be submitted via the official Qantas careers website, although do remember that successful candidates will be employed by Jetconnect – as such, pay and benefits, as well as work rules may differ from mainline Qantas cabin crew.
